Boryana Katsarova,(1981) is a Bulgarian/Russian born freelance photographer specializing in documentary, editorial &portrait photography represented by Paris based COSMOS Photo Agency
Professional experience:
- 2010-present – Freelance Photographer
- 2007- 2010 - At age of 26 she became photographer for Agence France-Presse, covering on a daily basis the most interesting of the local and international spot, political and feature stories on the territory of Bulgaria. During the three years of work in AFP her work appeared in the world biggest newspapers and online publications.
- 2003 - She started her career as freelance photojournalist at age of 22 working for the local Bulgarian newspapers and magazines as GEO, GRAZIA, INTRO, Night and Daily Trud /local press/.
Personal Documentary Projects:
- 2011-present “The Touch”- This project is devoted to the water and is a personal journey through the world of the hot mineral springs and the connection people have with the health-giving water itself.
- 2010-2012 “Lonely Bulgaria” Is documentary project about the social situation in the rural areas in Bulgaria. This documentary story is my personal fight against the poverty, the loneliness, and the depopulation of the country.
- 2004-2006 “PFAW” ”People from Another World” is a visual story about the everyday life of the inhabitants in one of the biggest Bulgarian Psychiatric clinics.
- 2004-2005 “Unseen World”: Out of Sight Bulgarian Visually Impaired People Struggle to Survive”.
Education and Training Background:
- 2011 March – Selected for participation in NOOR-Nikon Masterclass in Documentary Photography, Bucharest Romania with Stanley Greene, Philip Blenkinsop, Pep Bonet and Claudia Hinterseer.
- 2004 October - Selected for participation in First Credit Suisse Choice Masterclass for Photojournalists from Central and Eastern Europe, Hungary. Tutors: Alison Morley (ICP), Robert Pledge president of Contact Press Images, Tamas Revesz photographer, Jay Manis Faculty member of School of Visual Arts, New York, USA.
- 2004 - Participation in the First Masterclass for photojournalism organized by the Bulgarian Center for Media Development and the American Embassy in Bulgaria.
- 2001 - One-month training course in the Department of Photography, Thompson Reuters Bulgaria.
- 1998-2003- She holds Bachelors Degree in Artistic and Applied Photography from the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts “NATFA” /1998-2003/, Sofia, Bulgaria.
Awards:
- 2011 "Lonley Bulgaria" Project was nominated for ANI Coup de Coeur Photo Prize 2011 during this year Perpignan Visa pour l'Image Festival and took part in the participants exhibition there.
- 2011 “Canon Picture of the year”, Bulgaria 2011, First place Photo Essay Category for "Lonely Bulgaria".
- 2005 “Canon Picture of the year”, Bulgaria 2005, First place in the Photo Essay Category for “Unseen World”, Out of Sight Bulgarian Visually Impired People Strugle to Survive”.
- 2005 BG Press Photo, Everyday Life Stories for "Dependence", Third place.
- 2004 First place, Photo Essay Category for PFAW ”People from Another World”, visual story about the inhabitants in one of the biggest Bulgarian Psychiatric clinics. Competition was organized by the Bulgarian Center for Media Development and the American Embassy in Bulgaria.
